Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a leading international center for biomedical research, communication, and education. Founded in 1890, its scientists have made significant contributions to the fields of cancer, neuroscience, plant biology, and quantitative biology. And throughout its history, CSHL has been a crossroads for the communication of new science, through conferences, courses, book and journal publishing, and – most recently – the creation of the preprint servers bioRxiv and medRxiv.

bioRxiv and medRxiv enable scientists to share the results of their work freely, internationally, and without the delays associated with peer review. Now hosting more than a quarter of a million manuscripts, and with more than 8 million readers each month, both servers use HighWire’s submission system and content hosting platforms.

In January 2020, the first studies of the newly identified SARS-CoV2 virus were posted to bioRxiv. medRxiv was just 6 months old but from January to May 2020 had a 10-fold rise in submissions, most pandemic-related. By the end of the year, more than 10,000 pandemic-related preprints were posted to bioRxiv and medRxiv. According to the research paper Preprinting the COVID-19 Pandemic, bioRxiv and medRxiv had significantly higher usage per COVID-19 preprint than other servers. The CSHL servers continue to be vitally important, ongoing channels for new information about the biology of the coronavirus, its clinical impact, and public health consequences. They are now a source of more than 28,000 pandemic-related preprints. The servers’ usage is global and, during the public health emergency, spiked to 13 million page views per month. Despite this traffic volume, the HighWire-hosted sites maintained an uptime of 99.8%.

Our collaboration with CSHL during the pandemic exemplifies HighWire’s commitment to innovative technologies to support research communication.
