30 Years of HighWire- A Legacy of Innovation in Scholarly Publishing

In 1995, HighWire was founded at Staford University with a vision: to Create Innovation in the Service of the Scholarly Community by building a community of scholarly publishers who shared a common goal of making research and scholarship more accessible. What started as an idea at Stanford in 1995 is today a leading industry player with products that service the entire publishing lifecycle.

In this special video John Sack, our founder shares the story of HighWire’s origins—how it all began with a commitment to listening to publishers, understanding their needs, and building tools that reflect the collective aspirations of the scholarly community.

From the early days of digital publishing to today’s innovative and future-ready solutions, HighWire has always been about collaboration, creativity, and community. John and his team poured their hearts into building a platform that serves the evolving needs of researchers, editors, and publishers.

Today, we continue that legacy—driving innovation that makes scholarly publishing more efficient, accessible, and impactful.
