Over twenty publishers use HighWire’s Impact Vizor for faster, easier ‘evidenced-based’ publishing insights

Twenty-one publishers now use Impact Vizor by HighWire Press, a suite of interactive, visualized analytics viewers which launched in August 2015. Impact Vizor was an ALPSP 2015 Award for Innovation in Publishing finalist. Today publishers use the seven dashboards in Impact Vizor to visualize, analyze and compare editorial programs for rapid insights. HighWire developed the tools with critical input from several publishers. At the HighWire Community meeting recently held at Stanford, publishers shared several ways they use Impact Vizor to evaluate and develop their publishing programs.

"Impact Vizor has quickly become an invaluable tool enabling us to discover interesting trends. We are impressed with the speed and clarity of the insights now available to our editorial team,” said Keith Gigliello, Senior Manager, Digital Publications, American Society of Hematology (ASH).  “We can analyze top-cited research by topic and country.  This evidence can corroborate what our editorial board understands about regional differences in research focus, centers of excellence, and international top authorship.”

Impact Vizor helps non-technical publishing staff and editors easily frame questions and interpret the data to gain insights into the impact of publishing decisions, including the decision to reject an article. HighWire customizes Impact Vizor for each publisher by integrating its proprietary manuscript data with data from several sources, including citation data from CrossRef and Scopus, saves to Mendeley, and social shares. Previously, this data was difficult to obtain, time-consuming to integrate and interrogate, and required specialized skill sets.

The highly visual data representations provide a view to the publication history of any article, from initial submission to its final publication in any journal.   American Chemical Society (ACS) has used the Rejected Article Tracker (R.A.T.) viewer to evaluate manuscript flow across journals.

“The Rejected Article Tracker viewer helped ACS to assess the progress of our new manuscript transfer program,” said Sonja Krane, Managing Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS). “When a JACS editor determines that a manuscript might be more suitable for another ACS journal, authors can now transfer their submission to the suggested journal using a streamlined process. Impact Vizor showed us that during an initial nine-month period, the ACS manuscript transfer program produced a measurable increase in the number of articles that were subsequently published in another ACS journal, providing evidence that authors and ACS benefit from the new transfer capability.”
